This week’s Tip has been pre-empted by the National Association of Realtors®. The regularly scheduled Tip of the Week will resume next week.
Several years ago NAR mandated that all Realtor members must complete the Code of Ethics training on a regular basis. Previously the course had to be renewed within a four year period. The current period, cycle 4, ends December 31, 2016.
Starting in 2017, the course must be taken every two years. So after this year, you will need to take it again before the end of 2018.
Let’s clarify one thing before going much further. Many members believe that the Code of Ethics training is required for your real estate license. This is NOT the case. While some of the courses carry 3 hours of CE credit that can be applied to your license, the Code of Ethics course is for NAR membership. This is not the same as the state required Core Law course.
ECAR is offering several Code of Ethics courses at both of our offices. However they are filling up quickly. So if you want the CE credit and prefer an “in-person” course, sign up early.
If you can’t make one of the ECAR classes and do not need the CE credit, you can take the course online at http://www.realtor.org/code-of-ethics/training. This course is free. Be sure to choose the Free Course for Current Members.
If you prefer an online course and want the CE credit, you can go to https://emeraldcoast.theceshop.com/online-education/florida/real-estate/broker-and-sales-license/continuing-education/courses.html. You can also go to http://www.realtor.org/code-of-ethics/training, and click the course for CE credit. There is a cost for this course on both sites.
With all of the online courses, you will receive a certificate of completion, when you pass. It is very important to email that certificate to our Education department as soon as possible so that we can make sure we have your member record updated to show the requirement has been fulfilled.
Finally, what are the consequences of not taking the course by the end of this year?
In a nut shell, NAR will suspend your member services. The most dramatic result will be on the state level, where you’ll lose access to Forms Simplicity and MLS Advantage.
Please do not wait to the last minute. With members from across the country streaming onto the NAR website to take the course in those last days, the site will slow down and may not allow you access.
If you’ve received an email from ECAR stating that you have not completed the course, please respond as soon as possible. If you have any questions, contact us as soon as possible.
